School's out for summer! Not just the Alice Cooper song but here at Bless this Mess Homestead. Our Spring here in Northwest, Ohio has been crazy! We had a hard freeze in the middle of May and a lot with unseasonably cold weather. Then to top it off we received 9.75 inches of rain in 3 days! Major flooding in our community and a considerable amount of damage. Here at the Homestead we were very lucky and had no damage from the rains.
We have been very busy this spring getting animals and gardens all set. We started a new adventure with PIGGIES. They are just so cute (I know at 250lb they won't be as cute). So feeding and training has been a new learning experience. Smarty Pants (9 year old son) will be taking 1 for his first true year of 4H. We bought 3 show pigs off an amazing breeder, The Breese Family Show Pigs. Their pigs have taken Grand Champion at a few different counties fairs so we are excited to see how ours will do. The kids named them Charlotte, Wilbur and Bacon We had many kittens born on the Homestead this spring as well. 13 to be exact, way to many!, so if you'd like a kitten they are ready for their FURever home now.
Bless this Mess Homestead is officially registered with not only the NDGA (Nigerian Dwarf Goat Association) but now also with ADGA (American Dairy Goat Association). This is exciting us to be able to participate in both of these programs and provide good breeding lines of Nigerian Dwarf goats.
I've gotten my "Gardens of Weedin" planted with all kinds of goodies. So now it's just pull weeds and water until harvest. Last year I ordered my tomato plants local through Cindy Miller at the Potager and they were amazing so I couldn't have my garden without her tomatoes. I can't wait to pull off some juicy tomatoes and make some salsa!
We had a few milestones hit that requires attention. First Red graduated from Kindergarten. So proud of this sassy girl.
So since I'm showing off Red of course then I have to show off my boys Smarty Pants and Tornado! I got to say I may be a little biased but my goodness my kids are adorable! The little John Deere peddle tractor was the Hubby's when he was the same age.
The Hubby and I celebrated our 10 years wedding anniversary this past September. Most days I think to myself " how in the world did we both survive!" haha. Even more with a Homestead! He truly is my best friend and I find that its quite a milestone to celebrate!
With summer break started the kids have been hard at the chores in the morning to be able to get to the Daily Fun Schedule! This year our summer theme is Music. So each week day we do some fun things with music, like build a drum and learn beats and rhythms, cool STEM projects based around the Staff and games that promote learning how to read notes. I find music very important so my hopes is to have Smarty Pants and Red able to have the concept of reading music down by the time school starts and ready to choose an instrument. Wish me luck with this adventure!
Up next from Bless this Mess will be a road sign and, a roadside stand with fresh produce that's in season and other goodies! Also homesteading classes start in July, so be on the watch!
